Imma Ya/tiyannakum: Different Translations of the Same
Imma Ya/tiyannakum: Different Translations of the Same

Khazeh Fananapazir, M.D.

I would humbly point out that those who were indifferent to the implication of verse 7:35 of the Qur'an about the advent of future Messengers [Sale Rodwell] translated imma ya/tiyannakum as yes there shall come unto you [Rosol plural of Rasuul].

But as you see other translators perhaps concerned about its theological implication translated the very same future emphatic verb differently and in another way WHEN IT OCCIRS in 7:35 but NOT IN THE OTHER TWO INSTANCES…

In three verses of the Holy Qur’an [2:38, 20:123, and 7:35] the emphatic verb

imma ya/tiyannakum occurs.

Now in 20:123, and in 2:38 below as you see as any one can observe the translators translate as the future emphatic.

But when it comes to 7:35 the other translators [but NOT Rodwell and Sale] translate as future emphatic

002.038
YUSUFALI: We said: "Get ye down all from here; and if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from me, whosoever follows My guidance, on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
PICKTHAL: We said: Go down, all of you, from hence; but verily there cometh unto you from Me a guidance; and whoso followeth My guidance, there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.
SHAKIR: We said: Go forth from this (state) all; so surely there will come to you a guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.

Sale

We said, get ye all down from hence; hereafter shall there come unto you a direction from me, and whoever shall follow my direction, on them shall no fear come, neither shall they be grieved;

Arberry

We said, 'Get you down out of it, all together; yet there shall come to you guidance from Me, and whosoever follows My guidance, no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow.

2: 38. Qulna ihbitoo minha jameeAAan fa-IMMA YA/TIYANNAKUM minnee hudan faman tabiAAa hudaya fala khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

And again

 020.123
YUSUFALI: He said: "Get ye down, both of you,- all together, from the Garden, with enmity one to another: but if, as is sure, there comes to you Guidance from Me, whosoever follows My Guidance, will not lose his way, nor fall into misery.

SHAKIR: He said: Get forth you two therefrom, all (of you), one of you (is) enemy to another. So there will surely come to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, he shall not go astray nor be unhappy;

20:123. Qala ihbita minha jameeAAan baAAdukum libaAAdin AAaduwwun fa-imma ya/tiyannakum minnee hudan famani ittabaAAa hudaya fala yadillu wala yashqa

But look at this:

007.035
YUSUFALI: O ye Children of Adam! whenever there come to you messengers from amongst you, rehearsing My signs unto you,- those who are righteous and mend (their lives),- on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve. [conditional]
PICKTHAL: O Children of Adam! When messengers of your own come unto you who narrate unto you My revelations, then whosoever refraineth from evil and amendeth - there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve. [conditional]
SHAKIR: O children of Adam! if there come to you messengers from among you relating to you My communications, then whoever shall guard (against evil) and act aright-- they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.

AND YET

Palmer

¶ O sons of Adam! verily, there will come to you apostles from amongst you, narrating unto you my signs; then whoso fears God and does what is right, there is no fear for them, nor shall they grieve.

Rodwell

O children of Adam! there shall come to you Apostles from among yourselves, rehearsing my signs to you; and whoso shall fear God and do good works, no fear shall be upon them, neither shall they be put to grief.

Sale

O children of Adam, verily apostles from among you shall come unto you, who shall expound my signs unto you: Whosoever therefore shall fear [God] and amend, there shall come no fear on them, neither shall they be grieved.

7:35. Ya banee adama imma ya/tiyannakum rusulun minkum yaqussoona AAalaykum ayatee famani ittaqa waaslaha fala khawfun AAalayhim wala hum yahzanoona

This tells me that certainly  translators who are concerned that the verse should say future Apostles [Rasuul’s] will come put the VERY SAME VERB THE VERY SAME CONSTRUCTION into the subjunctive conditional]
